Emergence Ages of Permanent Teeth in Panjabi Jat-Sikh Boys
The present paper is part of a cross-sectionally designed investigation of growth of Jat-Sikh boys of Faridkot district in Panjab. The emergence ages of the permanent teeth have been worked out in 800 boys varying in age from 5 to 20 years by examining the emergence of permanent teeth in the oral cavity. The boys were drawn from educational institutions located in and around Faridkot. The boys belonged to middle class families residing in rural and urban areas of Faridkot district and by and large following agriculture as their profession. The total sample 800 boys was represented by 50 boys in each of the 16 yearly interval age groups.
Median ages of emergence of various teeth have been calculated. Bilateral and homologous differences in the eruption ages of the teeth in the upper and lower jaw have been pointed out. The teeth in the lower jaw erupt earlier than those of the upper jaw except the first premolar on the left side and the second premolar on the right side erupting earlier in the upper jaw. Bilateral and jaw differences in the eruption ages of permanent teeth are statistically non-signficant. The eruption ages and their age-ranges are provided for the eruption of various permanent teeth. The permanent teeth, except the third molar, are seen to erupt from the 6th to 13th year of life in Jat-Sikh boys. The third molar emerged in the oral cavity in the 20th year of life. The sequence of eruption of the teeth is seen to be similar in the four quadrants of the jaws.
